JOB TITLE:  Editorial Manager, Digital Content & eBriefings                                                                                                      

DEPARTMENT: Communications & Network Engagement

REPORTS TO:  Digital Content Strategist



The Editorial Manager will manage the editing, production, and promotion of Academy eBriefings, and will take the lead in building a new strategy to expand this product to a wider audience. (eBriefings are online, multimedia publications that synopsize the cutting edge science presented at the Academy in an accessible, online format.) With the guidance of the Digital Content Strategist, the Editorial Manager will contribute regularly to the Academy’s social media channels, acting as the social media lead for eBriefings and live-tweeting of scientific conferences, and helping to repurpose, share, and highlight other digital content produced by the Academy, including: podcasts, magazine articles, and Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, our scholarly journal.


  • Plan, prioritize, and oversee timely production process for 20-30 annual, online, multimedia reports of scientific symposia (eBriefings). . Liaise with Scientific Programs, Communications, Web team, and other key stakeholders to ensure that all parties understand production timelines, deadlines, and requirements.
  • Proofread and edit manuscripts summarizing the proceedings of scientific and science-related symposia as prepared by freelance science writers, as well as other forms of copy for publication. Confer with authors and recommend revisions. Make stylistic, structural, factual, and grammatical corrections where appropriate. Track copy through editing and production stages.
  • Repurpose eBriefing content across channels by creating infographics, short videos, etc.
  • Work with Academy senior leaders to evolve the eBriefings product, and  develop/implement a strategy to expand eBriefings to a wider global audience.
  • Find creative ways to expand the reach of the Academy’s digital content through social media, external publishing platforms, and/or partnerships. Work with supervisor to prototype new methods of sharing content.




  • Coordinate pre-publication eBriefing review and approval by symposium speakers.
  • Recruit and manage pool of freelance science writers, from contracting through invoicing.
  • Manage departmental budget for eBriefings, including interdepartmental invoicing.

Digital Content

  • Repurpose podcast, magazine, and Annals content using infographics, short videos, etc.
  • Use Google Adwords to help increase the reach/consumption of the Academy’s digital content.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism (or related field) with demonstrated interest and/or experience in the sciences.
  • 3 or more years experience working in a journalism or science writing environment
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent project management and strategic planning skills, with experience handling professional correspondence.
  • Ability to work with multiple teams across departments and to manage parallel projects with tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of and comfort with primary social media platforms (e.g., Twitter) required.
  • Experience using a web content management system (CMS) platform a plus.
  • Familiarity with design programs, analytics, and SEO a plus.


The Academy operates during standard business hours Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm. Standard work week is 35 hours, unless otherwise noted.


This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment.

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filling cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
